Home NewsArthur Chilingarov NSRA president has approved Jamal Nenets Geographical Society activity on Environment and infrastructure development in the Arctic.

At the end of 2021, the Governor of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area Dmitry Artyukhov announced that 5 hectares of the territory near Marresalya polar meteorological station would be cleaned in the summer of 2022as part of the Cleaning Arctic federal project. It comes to the export of about 3,000 tons of scrap metal from Yamal Peninsula.

“We have declared next year the Year of Ecology. We will make a broad public discussion, form a program and in summer we will be engaged in a large-scale environmental cleaning,” the Governor explained at the meeting in which the head of Ministry of Development of the Far East Alexei Chekunkov also took part.

Since January 2020, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the branch of Russian Geographical Society for Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug is Jamal Nenets  Governor.

The Head of Dixon Island polar meteorological station watched not only testing of communication facilities. Also the work of the SAVER intelligent device was demonstrated to him. The device is designed for remote monitoring of autonomous power supply at hard-to-reach objects in the High North and protection of household electrical consumers at meteorological stations.

Under Arctic conditions, human lives often depend on the reliability of radio communication, for example, at a hard-to-reach polar meteorological station, where there is no access to the Internet, no coverage of cellular networks and when it is not possible to use satellite systems using foreign servers. The best way to check reliability of radio communication equipment is to conduct regular integration tests that most closely simulate real operating conditions.

27th of February, 2022 was the day of this stage of testing and the International Day of the Polar Bear which is very symbolic. The polar bear is the largest land predator on the planet. The reduction of ice area in the Arctic seas is forcing these animals to spend more time on the coast and islands.Since 2010, Russian Geographical Society has been supporting the Polar Bear project. Its objective is to keep and study these predators in Russian Arctic.

An important part of ensuring the national interests of Russia in Arctic is extensive development of communication and information support systems in all areas. These include from creation of modern domestic satellite and short-wave communication systems, navigation and extensive commercial mobile communication network to remote computer consulting in case of providing medical consulting.
