U.S. Embassy Moscow
While it is unfortunate that I cannot welcome you in person at Spaso House this year due to COVID-19, I wanted to greet you today and share my thoughts about the importance of Independence Day in American history.
The Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Thomas Jefferson, the drafter of the Declaration of Independence, envisioned a country embracing continuous, but peaceful, political change. For Jefferson, each generation would refine its laws to fit the current times. Indeed, Jefferson’s dream of a self- governed and ever-evolving society has been the cornerstone of our
political philosophy for 244 years.
We remain committed to the ideal that our founders set forth in 1776 – to form a more perfect union. Likewise, my team and I remain committed to strengthening our partnership with colleagues like you and to continuing to build bridges between the United States and the people of Russia.
On behalf of the American people, I send you my warmest greetings on the 244th commemoration of America's birth. I look forward to the opportunity to engage with you again soon. In the meantime, please stay well.
Happy Independence Day!
Sincerely,
John J. Sullivan
